About Our Firm
Hahn & Hessen LLP is unique in that it enables an attorney to enjoy all the benefits of a large firm practice and client base in a mid size environment at a firm recognized for leadership in its practice areas. We think this gives an attorney the best of both worlds - the advantages of working in a New York City law firm with a sophisticated, diverse practice and a congenial, intimate and relaxed atmosphere that makes "learning the ropes" easier and more pleasant.
Our Practice Groups
The firm’s practice groups include bankruptcy, business finance, corporate/securities and tax, litigation and real estate. In addition to obtaining experience in the specialty practice groups, our associates benefit from the firm's integrated practice philosophy by working with attorneys in the other practice groups. For example, in restructuring and working out a loan facility the associates and partners in our business finance, bankruptcy and litigation practice groups work together as a team and in purchasing or selling a corporation in connection with a bankruptcy proceeding, our bankruptcy and corporate/securities and tax practice groups coordinate the transaction.
We believe the exposure to related practice areas enhances our attorneys' development and enables our attorneys to provide more effective representation to our clients.
Our Summer Program
The goal of our summer program is to give each summer associate a realistic picture of what it is like to work at Hahn & Hessen.
Each summer associate selects two practice areas to rotate through during the nine-week program. If, because of firm dynamics, it is not possible to satisfy each request, we make every effort to ensure that each summer associate receives assignments from the practice area(s) of interest.
Each practice area has a mentoring partner who is responsible for managing the summer associates' caseload and ensuring that the associates understand their assignments as well as the legal principles involved. In addition, each practice area assigns an associate who acts as a "Big Brother/Sister" during the summer and is generally available for consultation on any issue of concern in the transition from academic to professional life.
Our summer associates are given work assignments that would normally be handled by a first or second year associate. Typical assignments given to summer associates include conducting legal research, drafting motions and briefs (including appellate briefs), drafting transactional documents and attending client meetings, depositions and court hearings. Our summer associates often work directly with partners and they are an integral part of the Hahn & Hessen team.
In addition to working on matters for our clients, in-house educational seminars are given to our summer associates to provide broad exposure to our practice areas. These seminars are conducted by partners, special counsel and/or senior associates in an informal setting, which fosters a high level of interaction among the participants.
We believe summer associates benefit from thoughtful feedback on their performance from the attorneys they work with. To achieve this, informal critiques are encouraged between attorneys and the summer associates during the course of the summer. Summer associates also receive formal evaluations at the end of the first rotation and at the end of the program. We encourage summer associates to evaluate the program at its conclusion so that we can continue to meet the changing needs and address the concerns of our summer associates.
Getting to Know you and the Firm
Summer associates mingle and socialize with associates and partners at firm events throughout the summer. The firm's annual attorney outing is held during the summer.
By summer's end, we hope our summer associates will not only feel that they are being given the opportunity to join a prestigious law firm that will give them a bright future but that they are also joining the Hahn & Hessen family.
Summer Associate F.A.Q's
Q: What is the structure of the summer associate program?
A: Summer associates rotate through two of the following three areas: (i) bankruptcy; (ii) litigation; and (iii) a combination of business finance, corporate /securities and real estate. We make every effort to accommodate summer associates' departmental requests and, if we are unable to give them both of their choices, we try to give them at least one or two assignments from the department in which they are unable to work. Within each department, there is a partner mentor and a big brother or sister to offer guidance and assistance to the summer associates.
Q: What type of assignments will I receive as a summer associate?
A: We always try to get our summer associates involved in our most interesting matters and give them a wide range of assignments. Summer associates conduct research, prepare legal memoranda, assist in the preparation of various pleadings and briefs and get involved in corporate transactional work. Whenever possible, we bring our summer associates to closings, court hearings, depositions and client meetings.
Q: Do summer associates receive training at Hahn & Hessen?
A: Our summer associates receive both formal and informal training. Partners and associates at Hahn & Hessen make it a priority to ensure that our summer associates are not just completing assignments, but are receiving the training they need to become competent attorneys. In addition to the "on the job" training summer associates receive on a daily basis, we sponsor in-house lectures and CLE programs for summer associates, as well as our attorneys, to make sure everyone is familiar with developments in the areas of law that are pertinent to our practice.
Q: Are the partners and associates accessible in case I have questions?
A: Hahn & Hessen is proud of its "open door" atmosphere. Our attorneys are happy to discuss any matter of concern to a summer associate, whether it be a legal issue, a difficult assignment, or questions about the firm.
Q: Do the attorneys at Hahn & Hessen make an effort to get to know the summer associates?
A: It is very important to us to get to know our summer associates. Through social events ranging from wine and cheese parties to our annual attorney outing, as well as informal lunch and after-work activities, summer associates will get to know and spend time with our attorneys in informal environments.
Q: What kind of hours will I work as a summer associate?
A: Summer associates, like our associates, enjoy the quality of life commensurate with the balance between personal and professional lives, as reflected by our more reasonable billing expectations.
Q: What do you like about working at Hahn & Hessen?
A: At Hahn & Hessen, we are able to work with sophisticated clients on complex matters, but enjoy the "family" atmosphere and quality of life of a mid-size firm. This makes Hahn & Hessen a great place to work.
